FILM LONDON AND MIAMI MEDIA AND FILM MARKET ANNOUNCE NEW CITY-TO-CITY PARTNERSHIP

  • Initiative seeks to foster greater creative, commercial and cultural exchange between London and Miami-Dade County

  • Five projects selected for 2018 familiarization trip to London

Film London and the Miami Media and Film Market (MMFM) have announced the first step in a new city-to-city agreement between the two regions.

The first step in this new endeavour sees five projects selected for Film London’s 2018 high-end TV drama familiarisation trip. 45 projects were vetted and parsed by MMFM’s JL Martinez and Patricia Arias, with 10 being interviewed by Adrian Wootton OBE, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission, and Helena Mackenzie, Film London’s Head of Inward Investment and Business Development. The successful writers and producers will take part in the five-day Film London familiarization trip later this year, which will take in London’s studios, facilities and locations as well as the prestigious Content London event.

The selected projects are:

  • Blue Nose Bastards (producer, Robert Reese)

  • Call Me Al: Capone in Miami (producers, Karen Hall and JM Garcia)

  • El Ray (Matthew Wohl)

  • Ravaged (Jamie Lee Smith, Tony Haber, Edgar Frolov)

  • The Cleaner (producer, Ethan Banville)

Adrian Wootton OBE, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission, said: “We’re delighted to be building on our longstanding partnership with MMFM, and what better way to kickstart proceedings than by bringing these fantastic Miami-based writers and producers to London for a whistle stop tour of the capital’s world-class facilities. All of the shortlisted projects demonstrated ambition, verve and passion, meaning the competition was incredibly fierce and some difficult choices had to be made. We look forward to welcoming them to London later in the year, and hope they will bring some of the Miami sunshine to our capital along with their exciting new projects. I’d like to thank JL Martinez, Patricia Arias and the wider MMFM, and I look forward to working with them to create even stronger links between London and Miami-Dade County.”

Patricia Arias, Director of MMFM, said: “We are thrilled to work with Film London. We know this is the start of many initiatives which will have creative and economic impacts for both regions. Miami-Dade and London are diverse melting pots, and this is just the beginning. JL and I are honoured to be working with Adrian Wootton and Film London, and look forward to fostering opportunities with the UK which is so dear to our hearts.”

As well as working with MMFM to select producers for the upcoming high-end TV familiarization trip, additional activity as part of the new city-to-city agreement between Film London and Miami-Dade County’s MMFM included:

  • A ‘Knights of the Round Table: On UK Production, Creativity, and Talent’ panel discussing the benefits of filming in the UK.

  • A meeting with Carlos A. Giménez, the Mayor of Miami-Dade County, to discuss how the two regions might be able to work more closely together in the future.

  • A meeting with 43rd Governor of Florida, Jeb Bush, and Director of MMFM, Patricia Arias, to discuss the changing economic landscape and potential collaborative opportunities between the two industries.

  • A meeting with honoured guests from the Chinese film industry, at which Adrian was presented with the ‘Golden Lighthouse’ award for Special Achievement.
